Piecing Them Together While You’re Broken + 4 Ways to Preserve Your Peace

Countless times over the years, my eldest will say things like “I know that you’re going to work it out” or “I come to you because I know you’re going to make it happen.” And for the most part, she’s absolutely right. When I’m not busy making things happen, I’m busy stepping out of an audit meeting that needs my undivided attention to answer her call because of the strong sense of obligation considering she’s in a new city attending her first semester of undergrad.

I couldn’t bear the thought of not answering right in that moment instead of sending a text message that “now’s not a good time” because it could be urgent. Only I answer the call and I’m greeted with a playful, “hey giiiirl whatca doin’?”

When I ask if everything is okay, the response is “yes, just seeing what you’re up to” nine times out of ten, I just chuckle and tell her to get off of my phone because I have a meeting at the moment.

Other times, my youngest wants to tell me what went on at football practice that he didn’t agree with or in most cases, how awesome practice was right when I am running a bubble bath in hopes of getting in to soak and turn the imaginary switch off that controls everything outside of my bedroom for just 30 minutes.

Let me not forget to mention the nights over the years where I needed to come home and break down in my bathroom, but instead I had to keep it together long enough to get dinner cooked and served before my babies starve.

That break down would have to wait, and too often when I finally got the chance to sob in peace although the urge was still present, it would fail to come out leaving me very much full of the emotion that I needed to release, therefore making the feelings of whatever brokenness I was dealing with at the time eat away at my inner core.

Can you relate to this?
